The West Africa Drug Policy Network (WADPN) Secretariat is seeking for an intern, preferably female, who is fluent in both French and English with good translation and interpretation skills. The intern's primary role is to translate text scripts, transcribe video and/or audio clips, and in some cases provide interpretation services in French or English whilst maintaining their original meaning, format, and tone. The intern’s responsibility will further include reading and thoroughly understanding the context of given material, using specialised dictionaries and translation tools, and proofreading finished pieces of work. The successful candidate will be expected to provide ready-to-read translated content that meets WADPN’s standards and help the network’s broader audience.
WADPN is a regional network of civil society organisations with established chapters in all 16 ECOWAS West Africa countries. The Network's goal is to promote progressive drug laws and policies based on human rights and public health in the sub-region. WAPN Secretariat seeks a committed, motivated, and dynamic person to join the team as an intern to contribute to this goal.
Responsibility
Read given material and research industry-specific terminology.
Convert text and audio recordings from one language to one or more others
Ensure translated content conveys original meaning and tone
Prepare subtitles for videos and online presentations.
Cross-reference specialised dictionaries and translation tools to check the quality of translation
Proofread translated texts for grammar, spelling, and punctuation accuracy
Follow up with internal team members and clients to ensure translation meets their needs.
Edit content to maintain its original format (e.g. font and structure)
Network with field experts to stay current on new translation tools and practices
Eligibility
Proven work experience as a Translator, Interpreter, or similar role
Excellent communication skills (perfect verbal and written skills), synthetic-minded, highly organised & resourceful
Fluent in English and French
Good proofreading skills with the ability to identify grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors
Good knowledge of content editing tools and familiarity with translation software
Time-management skills
BSc in Translation, Interpreting or similar field.
Additional certification in Linguistics is a plus.
Duration
4 – 6 months
